Based on 2025 Intercollegiate document competency expectations for strategic oversight and system response. 

Intended participants

- Senior strategic leads / designated doctors and nurses / associate/deputy directors / heads / lead clinicians (level 5 roles) across UK nations.

Aims

- Refresh/confirm level‑5 strategic competencies: leadership, system governance, assurance, service planning, data and escalation.

- Equip senior leaders with advanced knowledge of statutory safeguarding frameworks, policy obligations, and inter-agency responsibilities for both children and adults.

- Explore trauma informed approaches/ practice and understanding the impact of adverse childhood experiences and how this should be embedded in organisational practice. 

- Develop strategic risk assessment and assurance skills to identify, prevent, and respond to complex safeguarding concerns across organisational systems.

- Strengthen governance, accountability and quality assurance mechanisms to embed a safeguarding culture and drive continuous improvement.

- Explore the capability needed to lead multi-agency partnership working, information sharing and escalation processes to achieve timely, proportionate protection outcomes.

-Enable strategic planning for workforce development, resource allocation and trauma-informed practice to support safe, person-centred care and promote long-term safeguarding resilience.
