About The Course

This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills required at Level 5 of the Intercollegiate Documents:

Adult Safeguarding:  Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff (2018)

Safeguarding Children and Young People: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff (2019)

In particular, the courses covers:

  • The roles of different courts and tribunals, including Coroner’s Court, Criminal and Courts, Family Courts
  • The roles of other types of hearings and proceedings: serious case reviews, professional bodies, and investigations
  • The role of professional witnesses and expert witnesses as independent educators of the court
  • Court principles and purpose: burden of proof, adversarial and inquisitorial contexts
  • The roles of various people in courts/tribunals/hearings/proceedings
  • The procedures and process of giving evidence: witnesses of fact, witness in person, remote witness, written statements
  • Developing skills and building confidence in giving effective evidence under cross-examination in person or remotely and how to give clear, honest and impartial testimony
  • Developing excellence in statement writing
  • Role play and practice to gain experience in being cross-examined and to receive detailed feedback
  • Developing skills and techniques to assist in preparation for giving evidence: examining records, reviewing available information, dealing with nerves before and during evidence-giving
  • Exploration of the importance of regular good governance to the giving of high-quality evidence in proceedings: excellent record-keeping practices; good communication between staff and management; strong internal policies, procedures and practice around safeguarding, complaints, disciplinary procedures, and internal investigations
