Emergency Triage Assessment and Triage
This is a one day course which enables staff with the skills to undertake an assessments and initial diagnoses for the purpose of escalating treatment. It covers how to recognise and assess an unwell patient using an ABCDE approach including the Interpretation of and appropriately acting on a NEWS2 score The course includes how to take a focussed history and to escalate when red flags are present.
The need for development of these skills and application within individual services will depend on the setting, the profile of patients within each establishment, and the focus of the service in which the registered nurse is working e.g. mental health, primary care.

To know how to undertake patient assessments into the correct triage categories
To understand how to use NEWS 2 and its application
How to recognise spotting sick patients/sepsis
How to undertakes a full assessment of patients, using case-based learning and scenarios of common scenarios (e.g. patient with abdominal pain, patient with difficulty in breathing) with teaching on identifying red and amber flags.
