Safeguarding Adults at Risk of Harm (& Overview Children)

Full day Training 9.30 – 16.00

Meets the requirements of level 3 Intercollegiate Documents

This course is a must for anyone who works with Adults at Risk from harm and who might have children visiting or withing the families of service users and it is based around the requirements of the Intercollegiate Documents which are used as a guide for training within other sectors such as social care and education.

Course Benefits: Provides a more in-depth training helping you to recognise potential abuse and know what to do if you believe an individual is at risk.  There is also an overview for children as the service users might have contact with children and they may visit the service.

Learning Outcomes for Adults (those over 18 years): -

  • To be able to identify possible signs of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse or neglect using a person-centred approach.
  • To be able to identify adults experiencing abuse, harm or neglect who have caring responsibilities, for other adults or children and make appropriate referrals.
  • Able to undertake, where appropriate, a risk and/or harm assessment.
  • To be able to know how to communicate effectively with adults at risk particular those with mental capacity issues, learning disability or communication need.
  • To be able to know how to contribute to and make considered judgements about how to act to safeguard an adult at risk.
  • To be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues surrounding suspicion of adult abuse, harm and neglect and to know how to effectively manage uncertainty and risk.
  • To be able to know how to appropriately contribute to inter-agency assessments by gathering and sharing information.
  • To be able to document concerns in a manner that is appropriate for adult safeguarding protection and legal processes.
  • To be able to know how to apply the lessons learnt from audit and serious case reviews/ case management reviews/significant case reviews to improve practice.
  • To be able to know how to advise others on appropriate information sharing.
  • To be able to know how to appropriately contribute to safeguarding adult reviews/case management reviews/significant case reviews, and domestic abuse related death review processes.
  • To be able to know how to obtain support and help in situations where there are problems requiring further expertise and experience.

Overview of key competencies for Children/Young People (the latter in England refers to young people up to 25 years): -

  • use knowledge and skills in safeguarding children and young people and have an awareness of what it means to be a child or young person in care, or care leaver (up to 25 years) to respond and manage additional vulnerabilities and need.
  • know their role and responsibility in working together with other staff to meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people; those who work in adult services have a different but vital role to provide the whole picture in safeguarding. Professionals should recognise the impact being involved in safeguarding can have on their own personal and professional wellbeing and seek support when needed.
  • utilise professional curiosity and proactively respond to any safeguarding concerns or additional intervention needed for care experienced children and young people and children and young people in care; it is an individual’s responsibility to respond and engage, within their area of expertise.

The course will also reflect organisation policy as required and relevant case studies.

Refresher training Adult

Over a three-year period, staff should be able to demonstrate refresher education, training and learning equivalent to:

  • a minimum of eight hours for those requiring Level 3 core knowledge, skills and competencies (made up of 50% participatory/50% self-directed learning)

Training at level 3 will include the training required at level 1 and 2 and will negate the need to undertake refresher training at levels 1 and 2 in addition to level 3.

Refresher training Child

Within level 3 there is an expectation the staff member will ensure a cyclical refresh of knowledge and gain new skills, and competencies related to safeguarding children and children in care over a 3-year period, recognising emerging themes and application to their areas of work.
